Adolescent Found Dead Following Untrue Allegations of Stealing Ashes
A 14-year-old boy was discovered deceased only a few days following being wrongly accused of stealing the cremated remains of a deceased baby during a burglary, an inquest has heard.
Heartbreaking Discovery
The young boy's mother and father discovered his remains in his room at his Connah's Quay home on November 19th, 2021.
False Allegations Begin
The inquest heard how his mother got a communication on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a woman asking if Kai was her child. The communication added: "Tell him thanks for breaking into my flat."
In a statement read to the court, Lisa Lloyd said the individual had been in the news, asserting her infant's remains had been stolen in a burglary - a allegation which was false.
Law Enforcement Inquiry
An investigation report from police later determined the alleged break-in victim had "provided false information" and "it now appears that said property was never taken in the beginning".
Media reports about the supposed stolen remains attracted online comments, and although Kai was not named in the posts, his parent said people "knew it was him".
The "social media content were really upsetting", she said.
Mental Wellbeing Impact
She explained that Kai had been diagnosed with moderate ADHD, and as part of that condition, other peoples' views genuinely mattered to him.
"It would have hurt him deeply," she commented, "particularly when this was untrue".
Kai was arrested at his residence, but no evidence was found. He was taken to a police station and later freed pending further inquiry.
Police said they would be in contact, the hearing heard, but had failed to reached out to the family by the time of his passing.
Withdrawal and Worry
His parent said her son "became isolated" after the arrest and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the police", because his ADHD meant sometimes "a minute could seem like much longer".
When she talked to him about the alleged burglary, she said her child informed her he had entered the house because the woman who resided there had said he could utilize the toilet anytime he needed, but denied removing anything.
Digital Harassment
In a combined testimony between her and her spouse, the mother said her child was being harassed online after the allegations.
The proceedings learned that a young adult urged Kai to end his life.
She had no concerns on the evening before he died, describing how she had heard him "laughing and teasing".
She portrayed him as a "compassionate, affectionate" boy, and said her "relatives is completely devastated".
He had been "obviously concealing his concerns", she stated, adding that he could not bear to have anybody "have negative thoughts of him".
School Response
The hearing received testimony from school staff at the local secondary school.
On 8 November, she "overheard some students discussing that the student had been detained and that was the first I heard".
"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.
After the conversation, the educator said she called Kai's family landline and left a message saying she had spoken to Kai about the accusations.
The court heard his parents said they did not got that communication.
Formal Conclusion
Lead investigator told the inquest he would wait for documents regarding what improvements had been made to handling individuals with ADHD, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of future fatalities report.
Delivering a descriptive conclusion, he stated: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old individual.
"Probably falsehoods were subsequently exaggerated and amplified through the platform of online networks.
"During November 11th, he was questioned by the police and after his interview he was released while inquiries proceeded."
The coroner concluded: "Exists no evidence that the actions or failures of any organization led to or added to his passing and although it was the outcome of a personal action it is not possible to determine his purpose."
